Spring is here: how to eat well this season

The mornings still have a bite, but the light has changed, and the gardens are waking up. Spring in New Zealand means courtyards, garden bars, and outdoor tables are open again after a winter indoors. If you eat gluten-free, plant-based, or manage another dietary requirement, spring dining season is worth watching closely. Menus refresh, kitchens change suppliers, and what worked for you in June might not be the same in October.

1 - New season, new menu

Spring often brings a full menu refresh. A dish that was safe for you last season may have changed ingredients, suppliers, or preparation. Never assume last visit's information still holds; check current dietary info every time.

3 - Layer up, the nights are still cool (and so is the shade!)

Spring days can be lovely, but in Spring, evenings still have a chill. If you're booking a table for later in the day, check whether the venue has heating, blankets, or a covered option for when the temperature drops. Nobody enjoys a perfect garden setting through chattering teeth.

4 - Fresher produce, more options

Spring produce means lighter, fresher dishes start appearing on menus, which is usually good news if you're plant-based or juggling more than one dietary requirement. Double-check salad ingredients; for example, we often see salads listed as vegan arriving with Caesar dressing. Don’t be afraid to clarify.

5 - Book ahead, everyone has the same idea

The first warm weekend of the season, every outdoor table in town gets booked out fast. If you've found a venue that handles your dietary needs well, don't leave the booking until the day of. Wednesday is a great day to book. This also gives the kitchen plenty of time if you have a complex need.

6 - Check before you go

Rather than guessing or turning up and hoping, check a venue's verified dietary info before you book a table. It saves the awkward conversation at the door, and it means you can actually relax once you're there.

Spring is a short window before summer bookings get even harder to come by. Get your dietary info sorted, grab a jacket for later, and go find a garden table. And if you want to skip the guesswork entirely, Eat Choice will show you which venues near you actually work for what you eat.
